Interessant experiment dat niet altijd even goed slaagt。 Hoewel het voorwoord tot het beste wat ik in tijden gelezen heb behoord， is het in de overige essays en verhalen soms een beetje zoeken naar wat dit nu allemaal precies met elkaar te maken heeft。 Als schrijver moet het een feest moet zijn geweest om in elk stuk een nieuwe vorm uit te kunnen proberen， maar je als lezer slaat het je soms een beetje uit het lood。 Je schiet van hoogtepunten （de essays over de Kaspische tijger， Sappho en die Gr Interessant experiment dat niet altijd even goed slaagt。 Hoewel het voorwoord tot het beste wat ik in tijden gelezen heb behoord， is het in de overige essays en verhalen soms een beetje zoeken naar wat dit nu allemaal precies met elkaar te maken heeft。 Als schrijver moet het een feest moet zijn geweest om in elk stuk een nieuwe vorm uit te kunnen proberen， maar je als lezer slaat het je soms een beetje uit het lood。 Je schiet van hoogtepunten （de essays over de Kaspische tijger， Sappho en die Greta Garbo imitatie） naar dieptepunten （de essays over de eenhoorn， Thomas Cook en dat rare verhaal over die man die vreemd gaat） en ondertussen wens je dat er een iets duidelijkere rode lijn doorheen het boek zou hebben gezetten。 Prachtig uitgegeven en vertaald。 Dat dan weer wel。 。。。more

Each chapter begins with a mention of a historic loss， but then many continue with fictional recreations or modern-day tangents， which might appeal to some people。 But I felt disappointed that actual history had been mentioned and then yanked away。

****tKASPISCHER TIGER - is unfortunately another species that has gone lost from our planet forever。 The last Caspian Tiger is said to have been seen near the Caspian Sea in 1964。 Schalansky creates a story situated in Roman times when wild animals were used in Circus Arenas to confront and fight each other to death。 There is no relation between the extinction of this tiger and the Circus， but it reminds the reader of the profound cruelty the human species is capable of， just for excitement and distraction。 The work is perfect in style and historical details， but for its cruelty， I would not like to read it again。 *** GUERICKES EINHORN - in 1663 a scientist by the name of Otto von Guericke was the first person to have reconstructed the skeleton of a Unicorn from old bones he had assembled， or so he pretended。 It turned out that this beast was assembled from different ancient Dinosaur remains。 The skeleton， after the man’s death， was disassembled and the parts are given to any scientist having an interest。 The Unicorn was lost。 Schalansky discloses her intention of writing a story about monsters still living in the mind of old people dwelling in high mountain villages in Switzerland。 She stays a week in an isolated old chalet。 Nothing comes out of the monster idea。 Instead， we learn that even the most reasonable individual can be distracted by sexual fantasies when staying alone。 *** VILLA SACCHETTI – is the story of a most beautiful Aristocratic Villa built-in 1628/48 near Rome; it was owned by the rich Cardinal Sacchetti hoping to be elected Pope。 But Rome was ravaged once again by the Pest。 The Cardinal died and Seigneurial Palace fell to ruins。 But ruins were fashionable at the time。 Schalansky’s story is the life of an Italian copperplate engraver and a young French painter of the ruins， living the life and miseries of Rome and Paris。 The background theme seems partly borrowed from Dicken’s “A Tale of Two Cities”。 It is one of the better stories and well worth reading。 **** DER KNABE IN BLAU – The ‘Boy in Blue is the title of a silent movie produced in 1919 near Münster。 The place of action was an old castle die Wasserburg Vischering。 The principal requisite was an old painting showing a noble ancestor of the present owner of the castle and actor of the movie， The Boy in Blue。 Only a few precious fractions in five different colour shades of the original Nitrate support are kept in a museum in Berlin。 Schalansky’s story is a day in the life of an aging actress Greta Garbo。 The lady lives an extremely solitary life erring and pacing the streets of Manhattan。 Her confused thoughts are lost in her famous past as an actress seemingly unsure of her real sex， having acted both men and women in her films。 It makes it appear difficult for her to decide for which sex of human match to look for in her future。 Schalansky chooses to demonstrate in this story that she can also write in fast-paced and vulgar vocabulary airport-style literate。 It seems ill-chosen for elegant Greta Garbo’s late-life moments。 ***SAPHHOS LIBESLIEDER – Judith Schalansky was born in Greifswald 1980。 Sibylla Schwarz was also born in Greifswald 1621 poetess called the Sappho of her time。 More likely than not Judith knows about Sibylla， but she is never mentioned in this book。 However， young Sappho of 1621 may have been the inspiration for the present story of the ancient Sappho of 630 BC。 Sappho’s Love songs are easy to remember， so few of them have survived。 The lyrics to these songs are lost and can only be created by imagination， as did some performers in ancient times。 Sappho was born in Lesbos， an island close to the Greek mainland。 To call Sappho a Lesbian originally only means that she was a person born on that island。 But history would have it otherwise。 Sappho’s love songs were understood to be addressed to female friends。 Being Lesbian had become a term for female homosexuality。 And still is。 Schalansky cleverly dissects the anatomy by which the modern world is using the term。 ****DAS SCHLOSS DER VON BEHR – The Old Castle from the fourteenth century of the ‘von Behr’ dynasty located near Greifswald was demolished， looted， and burned out at the end of WWII。Schalansky’s related story is a series of her childhood memories， almost unrelated to the subject of the castle。 It is a nice and warm-hearted little story pleasant to read except for some strange comments from the child as to doubt of her mother and father being her real parents。 ***DIE SIEBEN BÛCHER DES MANI – On “The Seven Books of Mani” we seem to be in the ancient world of Gilgamesh in Mesopotamia。 The seven little Bible Books promoting Mani’s religion had been thought lost forever。 But in 1902 and 1929 parts of original manuscripts were found and some were kept in Museum collections in Berlin。 However， at the end of WWII when these documents were transferred to the Soviet Union， they got lost again and still are。The story is extremely well researched and written by our author and highly interesting to read。 *****HAFEN VON GREIFSWALD – The subject is a famous painting of the harbor of Greifswald produced by Caspar David Friedrich in the years from 1810 to 1820。 The painting was exhibited in Munich in 1931 when a fire at the exhibition destroyed all the present paintings including the one in question。Schalansky’s story describes her pedestrian exploration along the river from its tiny almost invisible source to its destination， running to the harbor of Greifswald。 This work is a masterpiece of literature in botany。 The author has control of an immense vocabulary of vegetation， birds， insects， local rabbits foxes and deer， frogs， and fishes， in a variety of shades of color， hard to surpass。 A feast to read for nature lovers even when there is little relation to the lost painting。 ****ENCYCLOPEDIA IM WALDE – The subject is the later life of a successful businessman in early retirement and a self-appointed scientist who had created an Encyclopedia of human knowledge in the forest of his property in Switzerland。 He used handmade stickers and posters fixed to trees， their roots， and branches。 The man died accidentally， alone in his garden after a fall he got exhausted and froze overnight。 His heirs cleared the house full of books， destroyed everything by fire or trash。 The collection contained seventy homemade books of illustrated sexuality。 Only a few were saved and kept private。 The garden was destroyed only a handful of scientific tables were saved。Schalansky’s story is presented as a letter from the now-deceased man to an undisclosed person。 He is looking forward to seeing the visitor and in the letter gives him， or her a detailed description of his work。 The writer’s focus gets more and more to the point of sexual interest and in the end， the subject of sex discloses the secret obsession under the cover of mostly imaginary science。 It is an unpleasant read and hardly recommendable。 **PALAST DER REPUBLIK – A Communist Peoples Palace in Eastern Germany。 In the description of the subject， it is disclosed that the enormous building had been constructed in 1976 using asbestos- concrete in violation of existing law。 After the reunification with the West in 1990， the German Bundestag decided to demolish the Peoples Palace and to rebuild the Original Municipal Castle of Berlin blown up in 1950 giving way to the communist doctrine。 It all took 40 years and a waste of millions of Euros。Schalansky’s story is a day in the life of an ordinary couple in Eastern Germany。 The author manages to include all the details needed to recreate a depressing atmosphere including allusions to an adulterous incident。 Unpleasant life and unpleasant read。 ** KINAUS SELENOGRAFIEN – G。A。 Kinaus 1848 was a fanatic moon scientist who， using a large telescope， spent thirty years of his life creating graphic pencil designs， called selenography’s， of moon craters。 Only two of these were published in a timely magazine whose collection was destroyed by fire during WWII。Schalansky produces an autobiography， as written by G。A。 Kinaus at the end of his rich and varied scientist’s life。 This work is a masterpiece by Schalansky of literature in style， originality， and imagination。 A great pleasure to read。 ***** 。。。more

The book is a series of essays with a few fictional and autobiographical pieces in the mix， all taking wildly different views of things that have disappeared in one way or another—extinct animals， demolished castles， islands that sunk back into the ocean， the lost poems of Sappho， a lost legendary film， and more—through deep dives into research and the resulting rabbit holes， imagined episodes， and personal reminiscences。 Because each chapter is so different it was very stop-and-go reading for m The book is a series of essays with a few fictional and autobiographical pieces in the mix， all taking wildly different views of things that have disappeared in one way or another—extinct animals， demolished castles， islands that sunk back into the ocean， the lost poems of Sappho， a lost legendary film， and more—through deep dives into research and the resulting rabbit holes， imagined episodes， and personal reminiscences。 Because each chapter is so different it was very stop-and-go reading for me， and some carried me along more than others。 What I did like was what a love letter it is to deep research and the fact that the flights of fancy it can inspire—the what-ifs， the missing connections imagined out of whole cloth—are just as valid a response to an archival item as the facts。 Asking questions is a huge part of research， and no one knows， when they start out， exactly which questions are going to prove useful to the search。 And Schalansky's book really pays homage to that—asking creative questions as an art。 I was almost less interested in the execution， which I found uneven—some really fun， others a bit tedious， and I had a lot of trouble with the chapter about the now-extinct Caspian tiger， which was all about animals fighting to the death in the Roman Circus， because I just can't take animal stuff。 But otherwise， it was an interesting exercise， if not a page-turner （which it wasn't intended to be， so caveat lector）。 。。。more
